SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - March 2025 - The Business of Women’s Sports in MN
DESCRIPTION:EVENT RECAP \nThe Rise of Women’s Sports: A Tipping Point \n2024 is being heralded as the year for women’s sports—not just a peak\, but a turning point. With women’s sports projected to surpass $1 billion in revenue\, it’s clear that this movement is here to stay. \nMinnesota’s Role in Women’s Sports Growth \nWendy Blackshaw highlighted Minnesota’s unique appeal as a hub for major women’s sporting events. Its strong sports culture\, fan engagement\, and ability to host large-scale events make it a top contender for national and international competitions. The Olympic Gymnastics Trials in 2023 were a prime example—costing the state $6 million but generating an impressive $75 million in return. She emphasized the importance of strategic investments to ensure continued success in attracting these events. \nSustaining the Momentum \nLea Olsen pointed out that while the recent “Caitlin Clark effect” has brought a surge in women’s sports interest\, this movement has been building for years. The key to sustaining it? Continued investment\, visibility\, and fan engagement. Media coverage\, corporate sponsorships\, and community involvement all play crucial roles in keeping the momentum going. \nBeyond the Game: Community Impact \nBoth panelists underscored how these events extend beyond the arena. Major sporting events boost local businesses\, create jobs\, inspire young athletes\, and strengthen community pride. Lea\, with her background in both playing and broadcasting sports\, also highlighted the need for more women in sports media\, ensuring diverse representation and perspectives in storytelling. \nCall to Action: How to Support Women’s Sports \nThe conversation ended with a call to action for the audience. Supporting women’s sports means more than just watching games—it includes buying tickets\, supporting brands that invest in women’s sports\, advocating for equal opportunities\, and amplifying female athletes’ stories. \nWomen’s sports aren’t just having a moment—they’re shaping the future of sports and communities alike. Minnesota is at the forefront of this movement\, and with the right investments and engagement\, the impact will continue to grow. \n  \nEVENT INFORMATION \nJoin us as Amanda Brinkman conducts a fireside chat with Wendy Blackshaw\, CEO of Minnesota Sports and Events\, and Lea B. Olsen\, renowned sports broadcaster and founder of Rethink the Win\, for an inspiring and insightful discussion on the state of women’s sports in Minnesota. The panel will explore the rapid growth of women’s sports\, their economic potential\, and the transformative impact they have on communities. From the rise of professional teams to the opportunities for investment and innovation\, Wendy and Lea will shed light on the challenges\, triumphs\, and future possibilities in this dynamic space\, leaving you motivated to champion the continued momentum of women’s sports! \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nWendy Blackshaw is currently President and CEO of MN Sports and Events\, the regional sports commission that brings economic\, reputational and social impact to Minnesota through the procurement and execution of iconic sporting events. \nSince MNSE’s inception in 2020\, Wendy’s unwavering vision to bring world-class events to Minnesota has resulted in hosting multiple mega-events including 2022 Women’s Final Four\, 2023 and 2024 Men’s and Women’s Big Ten Basketball Tournaments\, 2024 Olympic Trials – Gymnastics and NXT WWE. Future events secured by MNSE include 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup\, 2026 Summer Slam\, 2026 Special Olympics USA Games\, 2027 NCAA Men’s Basketball Prelims and 2028 NCAA Wrestling National Championships. Based on the spectacular success of the 2024 Olympic Trials – Gymnastics\, Minnesota has been named a finalist to host the event in 2028. \nWendy’s exceptional efforts at the legislature\, in securing funding for events\, have allowed Minnesota to become a competitor in the large-scale event market\, bringing in over 750M in economic impact to the state. \nPrior to Minnesota Sports and Events\, Wendy was Executive Vice President for MN Super Bowl Host Committee where she was responsible for Marketing and Sales and raised $53.2M to fund Super Bowl LII.  Prior to the Super Bowl\, Wendy was CMO for Sun Country Airlines. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - November 2024 - Minnetonka Moccasin + Cultural Appropriation: Lessons and Understandings
DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nSeventy-eight years ago when Minnetonka sold its first moccasin\, the term “cultural appropriation” was not part of the zeitgeist. In the past few years\, Minnetonka has undergone a transformation of sorts\, fueled by reconciliation work and reparative action. In 2021\, Minnetonka issued a public apology meant to acknowledge the brand’s role in appropriating Native designs along with a commitment plan that haloed everything the company needed to stand for moving forward.  Adrienne M. Benjamin and Jori Miller Sherer will discuss the lessons they have learned along the way that can help others understand the impact of this work and serve as a blueprint for brands and businesses to follow suit. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nAdrienne M. Benjamin (She/Her/Hers) is an Anishinaabe multi-faceted artist\, equity advocate\, and cultural educator. She utilizes the lessons of her life mentors and community elders to create meaningful\, current\, socially relevant\, and culturally significant work that intersects with her Anishinaabe values\, history\, and life ways. She is a cultural artist first and foremost\, creating jingle dresses and an array of other regalia and garments in Anishinaabe style. She is known for her work as the Reconciliation Advisor for Minnetonka Moccasins and has led their efforts to better relations and right wrongs of the past with Native people through public relations\, art\, and action. She has also worked with and educated other US companies on best practices for Native art and business. Adrienne is passionate about and vibrantly champions social justice and equity initiatives in the arts and education systems in her local community of Mille Lacs\, statewide in Minnesota\, and beyond. Adrienne is also an accomplished arts administrator\, having created and lobbied two successful arts and language based youth initiatives within her tribe; the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. \nJori Miller Sherer is President of Minnetonka\, a fourth-generation family-owned and operated footwear company on a mission to be a positive force by doing right by their people\, their community\, and their world. Jori joined the company in 2010 and has served as president since 2019. In her role\, she oversees global wholesale and direct-to-consumer sales\, as well as marketing focused on the distribution of the company’s next-generation products. An integral part of Jori’s role is making progress in Minnetonka’s commitment to reconciliation with the Native American community. Jori has been involved with the Two Ten Footwear Foundation since 2018\, first on its Associate Board and now with the Women In the Footwear Industry (WIFI) Advisory Group. She was also awarded a place on the “40 under 40” list by The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal which celebrates the next generation of business and community leaders. \nRECORDED SESSION \nIf you missed the in-person session\, we invite you to review the recorded session below. \n\nhttps://mwer.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Edited.mp4

She founded The Woke Coach® in 2018 because she wholeheartedly believes that racial equity is the defining issue of our time. As CEO\, she leads antiracist programming and inclusion training for a wide range of clients\, from local governments to the University of Minnesota\, Red Wing Shoe Company\, KNOCK\, inc.\, and the Walker Art Center. \nSeena is a 2022 Twin Cities Business 100 People to Know honoree; a recipient of the 2022 Women Presidents Organization Women of Color Achievement Award; the 2023 Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal Women in Business Awards; a 2023 Twin Cities Business Notable Nonprofit Board Members; 2023 Entrepreneurial Women of Impact from Women Presidents Organization (WPO) and Women Elevating Women (W.E.W.); and was named one of the 200 Black Leaders to Know by Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Seena is the Immediate Past President of the Board of Trustees at the Walker Art Center. She was the first person of color in the history of the institution to hold that distinction. \nSeena is a graduate of Columbia University and the Harvard Young American Leaders Program\, and is pursuing a PhD in Management and Public Service at Hamline University in Minnesota. Her other certifications include Train the Trainer from the University of Minnesota\, Clifton Strengths®\, and the Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI). \nFor information about hiring The Woke Coach® at your organization\, visit thewokecoach.com. Amy has served in a leadership capacity in many organizations including: GreaterMSP\, Washburn Center for Children\, the Michigan State University Eli Broad College of Business\, Committee of 200 and Women’s Presidents Organization. \nAmy is currently a Board Member for Health Partners and Executive Chair of Avio Medtech consulting. She loves being involved in an entrepreneurial space again and being part of a company that will intentionally focus on culture and relationships. Amy has 3 boys; Max\, Hank and Logan and a rescue dog they adopted\, Luna. \nRECORDED SESSION \nIf you missed the in-person session\, we invite you to review the recorded session below.
