SUMMARY:Fireside Chat: The Women Behind Sun Country's Remarkable Survival Story (In Person Only)
DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \n \nWhat does it take to build a business from nothing\, navigate repeated crises\, and survive in one of the toughest industries in America? \nJoin fellow MWER members for an intimate fireside chat exploring the extraordinary story of Sun Country Airlines—a Minnesota company born from adversity and sustained through grit\, resilience\, and entrepreneurial determination. \nMWER member Martha Pomerantz will lead a conversation with the three co-authors of the newly released book\, Minnesota’s Phoenix: From the Ashes of Braniff to Sun Country Airlines. Their book chronicles how a group of Minneapolis-based pilots and flight attendants\, suddenly unemployed after Braniff International’s 1982 bankruptcy\, came together to create an airline that would defy the odds for more than four decades. \nThrough personal stories and firsthand accounts\, we’ll explore lessons in leadership\, reinvention\, risk-taking\, and perseverance—topics that resonate with every woman navigating her own career and leadership journey. \nWe’re delighted to welcome all three co-authors: \n \nKaryn Fernandes\, former Sun Country employee\, current airline tech startup co-founder \nMaggie Hill\, one of the airline’s original flight attendants \nJennifer Kimball Gasperini\, current Sun Country flight attendant \nAdding even more relevance to the discussion\, the book arrives at a pivotal moment as Sun Country merges with Allegiant Air and relocates its headquarters from Minneapolis to Las Vegas\, marking the close of one chapter and the beginning of another. \nYour registration includes: \n\nTwo drink tickets\nSun Country snacks\nA food truck for member purchase\nA signed copy of Minnesota’s Phoenix: From the Ashes of Braniff to Sun Country Airlines\nAn engaging evening of conversation and connection with fellow MWER members\n\nCome hear a uniquely Minnesota story of resilience\, entrepreneurship\, and the power of people who refused to give up. \nGuests are welcome to this event! This is a great opportunity for members to invite potential members to get a taste of some of the events that MWER offers.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - August 2026 - A Conversation with Senator Tina Smith
DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nSenator Tina Smith believes politics should be about improving peoples’ lives. First elected as Minnesota’s 48th Lieutenant Governor in 2014\, she was then appointed to the Senate in 2017\, and won back-to-back elections. She is a champion for working class families\, diverse communities and reproductive freedom. Now\, in her last year in the Senate\, Senator Smith continues to be a fierce advocate for Minnesotans and is focused on continuing the progressive legacy of the seat she holds. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nSenator Tina Smith and her husband Archie have lived in Minnesota for more than 40 years and have two sons\, two daughters-in-law\, four grandchildren\, and a chocolate lab named Moose. \n  \n  \n  \nNote: MWER is a nonpartisan organization. When elected officials are invited to speak\, we confirm this with them and their staff. Given the difficulties that Democratic leaders (and some Republicans) have faced in Washington D.C. this year\, expect our speaker to voice opinions that may run counter to some MWER members’ viewpoints as she shares her thinking about what’s ahead and the importance of encouraging more women to seek public office.
