SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - August 2026 - A Conversation with Senator Tina Smith
DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nSenator Tina Smith believes politics should be about improving peoples’ lives. First elected as Minnesota’s 48th Lieutenant Governor in 2014\, she was then appointed to the Senate in 2017\, and won back-to-back elections. She is a champion for working class families\, diverse communities and reproductive freedom. Now\, in her last year in the Senate\, Senator Smith continues to be a fierce advocate for Minnesotans and is focused on continuing the progressive legacy of the seat she holds. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nSenator Tina Smith and her husband Archie have lived in Minnesota for more than 40 years and have two sons\, two daughters-in-law\, four grandchildren\, and a chocolate lab named Moose. \nNote: MWER is a nonpartisan organization. When elected officials are invited to speak\, we confirm this with them and their staff. Given the difficulties that Democratic leaders (and some Republicans) have faced in Washington D.C. this year\, expect our speaker to voice opinions that may run counter to some MWER members’ viewpoints as she shares her thinking about what’s ahead and the importance of encouraging more women to seek public office.  \nRECORDED SESSION\n\nIf you missed the in-person session\, we invite you to review the recorded session below. \nhttps://mwer.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Tina-Smith.mp4

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - November 2026 - Female CEO Fireside Chat
DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nFor nearly 25 years\, JJ Haywood has led Pizza Lucé\, helping grow it into one of Minnesota’s most beloved restaurant brands. Over that time\, she has had a front-row seat to enormous changes in the restaurant industry\, the workplace and the way people eat. \nAmanda Brinkman will sit down with JJ for a candid conversation about what she has learned through decades of leadership\, the challenges facing the restaurant industry today\, and what it takes to build a company and culture that can endure through constant change. \nThey’ll also explore what happens when the questions around you start to change: an adult child and an aging parent need you in new ways\, friends start talking about retirement\, and you find yourself thinking differently about what you want to do next. \nIt’s a conversation about the realities facing the restaurant industry\, leadership\, resilience and what we learn when we’ve been at something long enough to see just how much can change\, including ourselves. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nJJ Haywood is the CEO and co-owner of Pizza Lucé\, a Minnesota-founded pizzeria established in 1993\, with 8 locations across the Twin Cities and one in Duluth. With over 30 years of leadership experience in the restaurant and university sectors\, JJ is passionate about creating memorable dining experiences and building a team culture rooted in heart\, hospitality\, and hustle. \nJJ is actively engaged in her local community and the broader hospitality industry through board service with local organizations and Minnesota’s hospitality and tourism associations\, where she contributes to initiatives that support community growth and industry resilience.
