Recent protests and unrest on college campuses across the U.S. have surfaced questions and discourse about the appropriate role and responsibility of higher education leaders and their institutions during times of political and social unrest. Balancing various constituents’ beliefs and demands\, ensuring safety on campus\, and ensuring economic stability are sometimes competing priorities which introduce myriad challenges for leaders in this role. With our guest moderator Kerri Miller of MPR\, we will hear from a panel of higher education leaders in Minnesota about how they navigate these challenges and their insights about the sector’s role in complex and ever-changing times. \n\n                   4:00 – 4:15pm: Welcome \n\n\n                   4:15 – 5:30pm: Panel Discussion \n\n\n                   5:30 – 7:00pm: Networking Reception \n\nSPEAKER INFORMATION \n \nModerator: Kerri Miller is host of Big Books and Bold Ideas and Talking Volumes through MPR News. She was the political reporter for KARE 11 television in Minneapolis-St. Paul before coming to MPR in 2004. She also writes the Thread newsletter. \n \nRebecca M. Bergman is Gustavus Adolphus College’s 17th president. Bergman is the first woman in the 152-year history of the College to be named president. Bergman\, who served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2014\, spent the previous 26 years at Medtronic\, Inc.\, including the last 14 years as a senior executive. Her most recent position was Vice President of Research\, Technology\, and Therapy Delivery Systems for the company’s Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management (CRDM) business\, where she led a research and development team of scientists and engineers. She previously served as Vice President\, CRDM New Therapies & Diagnostics as well as Vice President\, Corporate Science and Technology\, where she directed biomaterials and biosciences R&D\, new therapy development\, and information management initiatives. Bergman earned her B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Princeton University and undertook graduate study in a Ph.D. program in chemical engineering and material science at the University of Minnesota. Bergman has received a number of Medtronic’s highest technical and leadership awards during her tenure with the company. She was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2001\, and elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2010. She serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Sigma-Aldrich\, on the Board of Directors of The Bakken Museum\, and on a number of academic advisory boards. She previously served on the National Advisory Council of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering of the National Institute of Health and the St. Catherine University Board of Trustees. \n \nDr. Suzanne M. Rivera is Macalester College’s 17th president. Having worked in higher education for more than 25 years\, Dr. Rivera is an accomplished leader\, instructor\, researcher\, and scholar. She is an advocate for social justice and brings a strong commitment to inclusion and equity to her role as president. \nPrior to her appointment at Macalester\, Rivera was the Vice President for Research and Technology Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland\, Ohio. She also served on the faculty in the Departments of Bioethics and Pediatrics at CWRU\, leading original research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health\, the federal Office of Research Integrity\, and The Cleveland Foundation. \nRivera previously served as Vice President for Research Administration at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas\, Texas\, where she also was a faculty member in the Department of Clinical Sciences\, and at the University of California-Irvine campus as an instructor and administrator. \nA national expert in research ethics\, Dr. Rivera frequently is invited to speak about a variety of topics related to biomedical research and science policy.  She has published numerous articles\, essays\, and book chapters that explore the moral dimensions of informed consent\, use of human specimens\, and protection of research subject privacy.  She co-edited the book Specimen Science\, published by MIT Press in 2017. \nDr. Rivera earned her BA in American Civilization from Brown University\, a Master of Social Welfare degree from the University of California-Berkeley\, and a doctorate in Public Affairs with an emphasis on health policy from the University of Texas at Dallas. \nShe and her husband\, American Literature scholar Dr. Michael Householder\, have two adult children\, Antonio (married to Eliza) and Elena. \n \nRob Vischer was named the 16th President of the University of St. Thomas on January 1\, 2023\, after acting as interim president for the previous seven months\, beginning in June 2022. He was inaugurated on May 12\, 2023. \nIn nearly 10 years as dean of the St. Thomas School of Law\, Vischer has helped leverage the law school’s mission to achieve critical objectives in student success and community impact. Over the course of his deanship\, the law school has dramatically improved employment outcomes for its graduates\, built a global student body by establishing partnerships with law schools in more than a dozen countries\, redoubled its commitment to whole-person professional formation\, maintained its top-25 ranking for scholarly impact\, and made racial justice core to its mission. The Harvard Law School graduate was an inaugural recipient of the Minnesota Lawyer Diversity and Inclusion Award for his contributions to the advancement of diversity and inclusion in the practice of law. \nBefore entering the legal academy\, Vischer was associated with Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago\, where he practiced corporate litigation. He clerked for three federal judges: Judge David Ebel of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals\, Judge Joan Gottschall of the Northern District of Illinois\, and Judge John Wiese of the Court of Federal Claims. He received his B.A. degree\, summa cum laude\, from the University of New Orleans\, and his J.D.\, cum laude\, from Harvard Law School\, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

If that happens\, we’ll enjoy lunch and networking\, and we trust that our members will understand that state’s business is always a priority. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \n\n\n\nTim Walz is Minnesota’s 41st Governor. He was first elected Governor in 2018 and won re-election in 2022. Accomplishments from his time as Governor include providing universal free school meals for students\, protecting reproductive freedom\, strengthening voting rights\, laying the groundwork to get Minnesota to 100% clean electricity by 2040\, cutting taxes for the middle class\, and expanding paid leave for Minnesota workers. Throughout his time as Governor\, Tim has prioritized making Minnesota the best state in the country to raise a family. \nBorn in a small town in rural Nebraska\, Tim’s parents instilled in him the values of public service\, generosity toward your neighbors\, and working for the common good that guide his commitment to Minnesota today. After high school graduation\, Tim enlisted in the Army National Guard. He attended Chadron State College and graduated with a social science degree in 1989. Tim spent a year teaching abroad before returning home to serve full time in the Army National Guard and eventually accepting a high school teaching and coaching position. \nWhile teaching\, Tim met his future wife\, Gwen Whipple\, who taught at the same school. They moved to Mankato in 1996\, where they worked at Mankato West High School. In addition to teaching social studies\, Tim helped coach the Mankato West football team that won the school’s first state championship. After 24 years in the Army National Guard\, Command Sergeant Major Walz retired from the 1-125th Field Artillery Battalion in 2005. DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nHuman Traffickers are in it for the money\, with an estimated annual global profits of $150 billion. MWER Board Member\, Tammy Lee\, is the CEO of OUR Rescue – a global NGO dedicated to ending human trafficking and the exploitation of women and children worldwide. Tammy will talk about OUR Rescue’s support for survivors and law enforcement as well as the new Center of Excellence in Minnesota and a $100\,000 matching grant for MN nonprofits in the antitrafficking fight. \nShe’ll also be joined by a special guest\, one of OUR Rescue’s K9s that is specially trained to assist police in finding electronic storage devices that may contain evidence of child exploitation. Prepare to be angered and inspired when you hear of this mission to protect our kids and vulnerable adults. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \n \nTammy Lee joined OUR Rescue from Xena Therapies\, a med tech company specializing in women’s health and orthopedics\, focusing on philanthropic support for women. Prior to founding Xena Therapies\, she was President & CEO of Recombinetics\, a bio tech company focused on human health\, regenerative medicine and animal welfare. With a background in corporate affairs at Carlson\, the University of Minnesota Foundation\, Delta Air Lines\, and Northwest Airlines\, Ms. Lee excels in coalition-building for policy change and spearheading multi-million-dollar fundraising efforts\, including for trafficking prevention. She also served on the White House Interagency Task Force to Combat Trafficking in Persons and other national boards\, advocating to end trafficking. On the other\, downtown hosted a near-record number of blockbuster events this year that had its streets and restaurants buzzing with activity\, and more people are finding their way back to Minneapolis on non-event days. \n\n\nSo what’s next? Adam Duininck\, president and CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council\, will talk about the current state of Downtown Minneapolis and will preview for MWER members a 10-year strategic plan that will be released publicly later this fall. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - November 2024 - Minnetonka Moccasin + Cultural Appropriation: Lessons and Understandings
DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nSeventy-eight years ago when Minnetonka sold its first moccasin\, the term “cultural appropriation” was not part of the zeitgeist. In the past few years\, Minnetonka has undergone a transformation of sorts\, fueled by reconciliation work and reparative action. In 2021\, Minnetonka issued a public apology meant to acknowledge the brand’s role in appropriating Native designs along with a commitment plan that haloed everything the company needed to stand for moving forward.  Adrienne M. Benjamin and Jori Miller Sherer will discuss the lessons they have learned along the way that can help others understand the impact of this work and serve as a blueprint for brands and businesses to follow suit. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nAdrienne M. Benjamin (She/Her/Hers) is an Anishinaabe multi-faceted artist\, equity advocate\, and cultural educator. She utilizes the lessons of her life mentors and community elders to create meaningful\, current\, socially relevant\, and culturally significant work that intersects with her Anishinaabe values\, history\, and life ways. She is a cultural artist first and foremost\, creating jingle dresses and an array of other regalia and garments in Anishinaabe style. She is known for her work as the Reconciliation Advisor for Minnetonka Moccasins and has led their efforts to better relations and right wrongs of the past with Native people through public relations\, art\, and action. She has also worked with and educated other US companies on best practices for Native art and business. Adrienne is passionate about and vibrantly champions social justice and equity initiatives in the arts and education systems in her local community of Mille Lacs\, statewide in Minnesota\, and beyond. Adrienne is also an accomplished arts administrator\, having created and lobbied two successful arts and language based youth initiatives within her tribe; the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. \nJori Miller Sherer is President of Minnetonka\, a fourth-generation family-owned and operated footwear company on a mission to be a positive force by doing right by their people\, their community\, and their world. Jori joined the company in 2010 and has served as president since 2019. In her role\, she oversees global wholesale and direct-to-consumer sales\, as well as marketing focused on the distribution of the company’s next-generation products. An integral part of Jori’s role is making progress in Minnetonka’s commitment to reconciliation with the Native American community. Jori has been involved with the Two Ten Footwear Foundation since 2018\, first on its Associate Board and now with the Women In the Footwear Industry (WIFI) Advisory Group. Wendy also held leadership positions at Mall of America\, Minnesota North Stars\, Rollerblade\, KDWB and KSTP-TV. \nLea B. Olsen is a game analyst for the Minnesota Lynx and a television sideline reporter for the Minnesota Timberwolves on Fan Duel Sports Network North. She also covers Minnesota state high school basketball tournaments. As a motivational speaker\, Lea challenges athletes\, coaches\, and business professionals to rethink winning at all costs. Lea founded Rethink the Win in 2015 to help preserve a healthy environment for athletes to thrive in. How is the Twin Cities region faring\, and what’s ahead? Four experts — rarely seen together on the same stage — will help unpack this complex and critical subject. We will hear from moderator Alene Tchourumoff\, CHRO and Senior VP of Community Development and Engagement at the Minneapolis Federal Reserve; Maureen Michalski\, Senior Vice President of Real Estate Development at Ryan Companies US; R. T. Rybak\, President and CEO of the Minneapolis Foundation; and Jamie Tharp\, Division President at Pulte Group. MWER members will leave with a better understanding of the ecosystem that is an essential ingredient in the future of our region’s economic and societal well-being. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nMODERATOR/PANELIST: Alene Tchourumoff\, The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\, is chief human resources officer of the Human Resources and Inclusion Division\, senior vice president of the Learning Management Support Office\, and senior vice president of the Community Development and Engagement Division\, which includes the Center for Indian Country Development. In these roles she leads the Bank’s internal human resources as well as the Bank’s external engagement with communities throughout the Ninth District\, with an emphasis on low- and moderate-income people and those living in Indian Country. \nPrior to joining the Bank in December 2018\, Alene served as chair of Minnesota’s Metropolitan Council\, where she built strong partnerships with local governments and community groups to advance transit\, housing\, and other critical infrastructure. She has also held leadership roles in the executive branch of the State of Minnesota and Hennepin County. \nAlene holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from George Washington University School of Business and a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. \nAlene was named a 2020 Women in Business honoree by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journaland is chair of the Family Housing Fund Board and a trustee of the Minnesota Science Museum. \nPANELIST: Maureen Michalski serves as the Regional Senior Vice President of Development in Ryan Companies’ North Region\, where she is responsible for overseeing all development activities along with shared budget and operational responsibilities. She has corporate responsibility for several significant projects\, most notably the transformative 122-acre mixed-use redevelopment of Highland Bridge in Saint Paul\, MN. With more than two decades of experience in real estate development\, Maureen excels at generating opportunities and maximizing value for both investors and communities. She has created over $1.5 billion in real estate assets\, including more than 4\,700 housing units and 1.1 million square feet of commercial space. \nIn partnership with her North Region co-leader\, Maureen is responsible for establishing regional budgets\, achieving bottom line net profit targets\, sourcing new business for the company\, shaping regional goals to align with the company’s strategic plan and acting as a steward for the vibrant company culture in the North Region\, which includes Ryan’s corporate headquarters. \nAs a respected leader\, Maureen is known for her integrity and focus on building talent.  She excels at establishing a strategic vision and implementing it while empowering others and encouraging collaboration. Her authentic relationships enable her to effectively mentor and guide her fellow team members\, while building trust and high-performing teams. \nMaureen contributes to the Twin Cities community by representing Ryan Companies on the Executive Committee of the Minneapolis Downtown Council and as a Board member of the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce. She is also active in the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Minnesota’s local product councils\, National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) and Women in Real Estate Development and Urban Planning (WIRED UP). Maureen is a graduate of Macalester College. \nPANELIST: R.T. Rybak became President and CEO of the Minneapolis Foundation in 2016 after careers in journalism\, publishing\, urban development and marketing\, and 12 years as Mayor of Minneapolis. Under his leadership the Foundation has more than doubled the money it directs to nonprofits\, now granting more than $100 million a year in Minnesota and around the world. The Foundation’s giving program focuses on equity and justice in education\, economic mobility\, and the environment\, creating what Rybak calls a “community of generosity” to align like-minded fundholders with emerging community needs. Rybak’s deepest passion is creating career pathways for youth of color\, including his founding and ongoing work with Step Up\, a youth employment program that has served more than 34\,000 Minneapolis high school students since 2003. \nPANELIST: Jamie Tharp is the Division President of PulteGroup’s Minnesota Division\, where she leads one of the state’s largest homebuilding operations. Beginning her career with the company as a college intern\, Jamie advanced through multiple leadership roles before being appointed Division President in 2017\, becoming the first woman to lead a large-volume homebuilder in Minnesota. \nUnder her leadership\, PulteGroup has experienced nearly 40% growth and introduced the Del Webb lifestyle brand to Minnesota\, revolutionizing the concept of 55+ community living in the region. Her leadership approach\, grounded in collaboration and empowerment\, has not only driven remarkable operational success but also fostered a highly regarded workplace culture. Since her appointment\, PulteGroup’s Minnesota division has been recognized annually as one of the Best Places to Work by the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal. \nBeyond her professional accomplishments\, Jamie is deeply committed to community engagement. She has served on the Executive Board of the Thielen Foundation since 2018\, supporting initiatives that positively impact families and children. Her commitment to innovation\, leadership\, and community impact continues to shape both PulteGroup and the industry she represents.

Bring your questions! \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \n\nNeel Kashkari is president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\, one of the Fed’s 12 regional banks. The Minneapolis Fed serves the public by pursuing a growing economy that works for all of us\, and the Bank’s district includes Minnesota\, the Dakotas\, Montana\, northwestern Wisconsin\, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Neel serves as a member of the Federal Open Market Committee\, which sets the nation’s monetary policy. Neel began his career as an aerospace engineer developing technology for NASA space missions. He later held a variety of roles in public service and finance\, most notably as assistant secretary of the Treasury during the 2008 financial crisis\, where he oversaw the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nAndrea Walsh\, President and Chief Executive Officer at HealthPartners\, and Jakub Tolar\, Dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School and Vice President of Clinical Affairs\, will present on the topic of “The State of Healthcare in Uncertain Times.” Healthcare providers and medical schools are being affected by the rapid and unprecedented changes resulting from federal funding cuts to programs\, research\, and care for undeserved populations. Our speakers will discuss the impact of uncertainty on strategic planning in the near and long term. As leaders in the current environment\, they will share their perspective on the impact on their institutions and on the potential impact on public health. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nJakub Tolar\, MD\, PhD is the dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School and a Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Pediatrics\, Blood and Marrow Transplant & Cellular Therapy. He is also the vice president for Clinical Affairs at the University of Minnesota\, board chair for University of Minnesota Physicians and co-leader of M Health Fairview\, the joint clinical enterprise among the University of Minnesota Medical School\, University of Minnesota Physicians and Fairview Health Services. An internationally recognized physician and researcher\, Dr. Tolar is known for his care of patients with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. His research is focused on developing cellular therapies for rare genetic disorders. Originally from the Czech Republic\, Dr. Tolar received his medical education (MD) in Prague at Charles University. In 1992\, he came to the University of Minnesota\, where he received his PhD in Molecular\, Cellular & Developmental Biology and Genetics. \n  \nAndrea Walsh is president and chief executive officer of Minnesota-based HealthPartners\, a non-profit\, integrated health system providing health plan coverage to 1.7 million members and health care to 1.3 million patients. She leads a team of more than 27\,000 colleagues dedicated to a vision of health as it could be\, affordability as it must be\, through relationships built on trust. \nWalsh has served as president and CEO since 2017. During her tenure\, HealthPartners has continued to deepen its reputation as a national leader in high-quality\, affordable care and coverage. She’s led with a focus on building healthy and high-performing teams and forging partnerships to improve health equity\, children’s health\, mental health\, and other important areas of community health and well-being. Prior to serving as CEO\, Walsh was executive vice president and chief marketing officer at HealthPartners for nearly 15 years\, and prior to that served as corporate counsel leading legal\, compliance and public affairs. \nWalsh began her career as a lawyer in private practice. In the early 90s\, she was appointed assistant commissioner at the Minnesota Department of Health and led health reform efforts to increase access to affordable health care coverage\, known today as MinnesotaCare.  She graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School and has degrees in business and English from the University of Kansas. \nWalsh is active in the community and currently serves on the boards of the Y of the North and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nIn 2025\, Hennepin County reduced the family shelter census by 15%\, invested $39 million dollars in funding shelter operations\, and opened 942 units of affordable housing. Join Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando and Hennepin County staff in an engaging and insightful discussion to learn more about the vision\, strategy\, and leadership that made last year’s impactful work possible. Chair Fernando and staff will share more about Hennepin’s Continuum of Care program and other ways Hennepin County is leading in the work to serve residents and those who have the highest needs. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nDr. Irene Fernando currently serves as Hennepin County Commissioner for District 2\, which includes Golden Valley\, Medicine Lake\, southeast Plymouth\, St. Anthony Village\, North Minneapolis\, Northeast Minneapolis\, and the much of the North Loop neighborhood in Minneapolis. Irene was elected to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners in November of 2018. Together\, she and Commissioner Angela Conley (District 4) were the first people of color elected to the County Board since Hennepin’s founding in 1852. She is the youngest woman to serve in this position\, and she is the first Filipino-American elected in Minnesota. Since 2023\, Irene has been elected annually by her Commissioner colleagues to serve as Chair of the Board. In her time on the Board\, Irene has fought hard to increase access to housing\, transit\, health services\, and jobs. Before joining the County Board\, Irene worked in not-for-profit and corporate settings\, and she instructed college courses. Her expertise is in youth development\, social entrepreneurship\, shared leadership models\, talent development\, and systems change. Irene studied at the University of Minnesota where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and a Master of Education in Youth Development Leadership\, and recently graduated with a doctorate degree in Human Resource Development. Irene lives in the Harrison neighborhood of Minneapolis with her partner Kent\, and their dog Mimi. As an executive on loan from Accenture\, she brings 35 years of business and leadership experience coupled with a very personal story\, having grown up alongside sister Katie\, a distinguished Special Olympics athlete and Global Messenger. Since joining Accenture\, Christy has built a reputation as a trusted and strategic client advisor. She is an authentic\, growth-oriented leader\, deeply experienced in driving transformational change and businesses to higher levels of performance. Not only this\, but she is passionate about the Twin Cities community and giving back\, serving on the boards for Greater MSP\, the Carlson School of Management\, and the Minnesota Business Partnership. Throughout her 40+ years of supporting Special Olympics\, Christy has been a coach\, Unified partner\, and board member of Special Olympics Minnesota.
