Eligible organizations must have a direct connection to an MWER member\, such as a CEO\, Executive Director\, or board member. \nEach participating organization will have two minutes to share how your work aligns with MWER’s mission of strengthening Minnesota’s economic vitality and creating opportunities for all to thrive. Because this is a social gathering\, we encourage you to make your remarks both educational and entertaining.  Enjoy this opportunity to help us learn about your organization while having a little fun along the way. DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \n \nWhat does it take to build a business from nothing\, navigate repeated crises\, and survive in one of the toughest industries in America? \nJoin fellow MWER members for an intimate fireside chat exploring the extraordinary story of Sun Country Airlines—a Minnesota company born from adversity and sustained through grit\, resilience\, and entrepreneurial determination. \nMWER member Martha Pomerantz will lead a conversation with the three co-authors of the newly released book\, Minnesota’s Phoenix: From the Ashes of Braniff to Sun Country Airlines. DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nSenator Tina Smith believes politics should be about improving peoples’ lives. First elected as Minnesota’s 48th Lieutenant Governor in 2014\, she was then appointed to the Senate in 2017\, and won back-to-back elections. She is a champion for working class families\, diverse communities and reproductive freedom. Now\, in her last year in the Senate\, Senator Smith continues to be a fierce advocate for Minnesotans and is focused on continuing the progressive legacy of the seat she holds. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nSenator Tina Smith and her husband Archie have lived in Minnesota for more than 40 years and have two sons\, two daughters-in-law\, four grandchildren\, and a chocolate lab named Moose. \n  \n  \n  \nNote: MWER is a nonpartisan organization. When elected officials are invited to speak\, we confirm this with them and their staff. Given the difficulties that Democratic leaders (and some Republicans) have faced in Washington D.C. this year\, expect our speaker to voice opinions that may run counter to some MWER members’ viewpoints as she shares her thinking about what’s ahead and the importance of encouraging more women to seek public office.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - September 2026 - Founders of MWER: Unfinished Business
DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nJoin our speakers Marilyn Carlson Nelson and Joan Growe\, founders of MWER\, as they discuss the history of the organization\, why they started it\, what they’ve learned\, and the work still left to do. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nMarilyn Carlson Nelson is former chair and chief executive officer of Carlson\, a global travel and hospitality company. \nMarilyn served as co-chair of the World Economic Forum\, chair of the National Women’s Business Council and chair of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board. Forbes named her one of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” U.S. News and World Report called her one of “America’s Best Leaders.” Under Marilyn’s leadership\, Carlson became the first global travel and hospitality company in North America to sign the international Code of Conduct to protect children from sexual exploitation in the travel industry. She and Carlson were honored by the White House for pioneering work to combat human trafficking. \nNelson recently retired as Chair of Inspire Medical Systems\, Inc.  Nelson is an emeritus board member of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy\, ExxonMobil\, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, and the United Nations Global Compact.  She is former chair of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees\, former chair of the Minnesota Orchestra\, former co-chair of two Super Bowl Host Committees and former secretary of the National Endowment for Democracy. \nMarilyn presently serves on the boards of:  The Carlson Foundation\, The Minnesota Orchestra – Life Director\, Minnesota Public Radio/American Public Radoi\, McCain Advisory Board on Human Rights and Human Trafficking\, and The University of Minnesota Foundation – Life Director. \nNelson graduated from Smith College with a cum laude degree in international economics and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris as well as the Institut des Hautes Etudes Economiques et Politiques in Geneva. \nMarilyn has two daughters\, Diana Nelson\, and Wendy Nelson and six grandchildren\, and one great grandson. \nJoan Growe served as Secretary of State of Minnesota from 1975 to 1999. Known for her work to encourage voter participation\, Growe had the second-longest tenure of any secretary of state in Minnesota history\, at 24 years. In 1984\, she ran for the US Senate against the Republican incumbent\, Rudy Boschwitz\, losing the election with 41% of the vote. \nJoan was raised in Buffalo\, Minnesota and graduated from Buffalo High School and St. Cloud State University. From 1973 to 1974\, Joan was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives\, representing the old District 40A\, which included parts of Hopkins\, Minnetonka\, and St. Louis Park in Hennepin County. In the House\, she served on the Crime Prevention and Corrections\, Education\, Judiciary\, and Metropolitan and Urban Affairs Committees. \nAs a state legislator\, Joan supported the Minnesota same-day voter registration law (the first in the country) and later\, as secretary of state\, she worked to implement it. Since then\, Minnesota has consistently had the highest voter turnout in the United States. \nJoan is widely recognized as an expert on voting and elections and has served as an official election observer in various foreign elections. She is also on the advisory committee for the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.

DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFORMATION \nPolitical Science Professor Kathryn Pearson will share insights on the upcoming U.S. House and Senate elections and Minnesota elections\, with a focus on the issues that are most important to women\, women’s candidacies\, and the impact of the 2026 elections. \nSPEAKER INFORMATION \nKathryn Pearson is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota specializing in American politics; her research and teaching focuses on the United States Congress\, women & politics\, and congressional elections. She is also the director of the University Honors Program and an Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education. Professor Pearson received her Ph.D. from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2005. Before receiving her doctorate\, Pearson was a Research Fellow at the Brookings Institution and she worked on Capitol Hill as a Legislative Assistant for two congresswomen.
